Belize’s new residency proposal could help business investors build a future here while creating jobs and supporting local suppliers. Here’s what entrepreneurs should know.
You have built a business. You know how to hire good people, win customers and keep them coming back. Now you are thinking about doing it in Belize—and living here to enjoy what you build.
Belize’s new investor residency proposal is aimed at entrepreneurs like you. It would connect qualifying business investment with a route towards permanent residence, include eligible family members and accommodate investors who still need to travel for work.
The government introduced the proposal on October 2. The San Pedro Sun puts the proposed threshold at US$500,000 invested in a new Belizean business. For Belize, the attraction is the employment and economic activity those businesses could bring. For an entrepreneur, it brings the business plan and the move abroad into the same conversation.

Picture the business behind the investment
Take Anna, an illustrative example of a Canadian entrepreneur who runs a boat-service company and wants to open one in southern Belize.
Her plan puts Belizean technicians on the payroll and creates a paid apprenticeship. She hires local contractors to prepare the workshop, buys supplies from Belizean businesses and opens her doors to boat owners who need repairs, maintenance and provisions.
Her investment starts paying people before the first customer arrives. Once the company is trading, wages support households and repeat orders support suppliers. An apprentice learns a trade alongside experienced technicians.
Anna wants a home nearby. Her partner plans to join her, and she will still make trips to oversee the Canadian company. The proposed programme would give qualifying investors a way to pursue permanent residence while allowing that movement between countries.
Under the ministry’s House outline, investors could become eligible for permanent residence after two and a half years, including a cumulative year in Belize. They would hold temporary investor residence during that period.
More businesses. More reasons to make Belize home.
At Red Rock, the existing marina makes Anna’s example easy to picture. A marine-service business could give boat owners another reason to keep their boats—and spend more time—in the area.
Around Mahogany Bay and elsewhere on Ambergris Caye, the opportunity might be a restaurant, a maintenance company or a service residents currently travel to find. A good business earns its place by making life easier for its customers.
Those businesses need premises. Their owners need homes. Their employees and suppliers benefit from the work. That is how an individual investment can become part of a community’s growth.
For entrepreneurs already considering Belize, the proposal is an encouraging invitation to take the next step: bring your experience, meet the people you could work with and find a place where your business belongs.
The programme remains a proposal. Final legislation must confirm the investment currency and timetable; published summaries differ on those details.
