Plan a move to San Pedro around the dog’s complete journey: settle the island connection, coordinate the international flight and BAHA paperwork, and choose a home that welcomes your dog.
Your dog may need three full-fare seats to get to San Pedro. You will presumably manage with one.
That is one of Tropic Air’s published arrangements for a larger pet: a secured kennel, with three seats purchased to accommodate it. Worth knowing before you congratulate yourself on a cheap flight to Belize.
The short island connection can dictate the whole journey. Your dog’s size, its kennel and the space available may determine which international arrival works, what the move costs and whether you need an overnight stop.
So start with the last leg. Once you know how the dog gets to San Pedro, work backward.
Solve the last leg first
Have your dog’s weight, breed, age and kennel dimensions ready when you contact the island carriers. Actual measurements matter here; “medium-sized” covers a remarkable range of dogs in their owners’ estimation.
Tropic Air also describes an option for small pets in approved carriers that fit on the owner’s lap. Ask reservations which arrangement applies to your dog and what it costs. Keep that answer with your reservation.
Maya Island Air publishes an in-cabin option for vaccinated domestic pets weighing up to 15 pounds in an owner-supplied kennel or kennel bag. Placement and charges depend on kennel size. Maya requests contact at least 48 hours before travel, but settle this while choosing flights. Larger dogs need a specific arrangement from the airline.
A boat may be another option. San Pedro Belize Express requires a suitable carrying bag or kennel and lists a pet weight limit of under 90 pounds. Kennels are available by advance request. Allow for the transfer from the airport to the Belize City terminal, with enough vehicle space for dog, kennel and luggage.
Now you can price the international flight against a connection that actually works.
A reservation for each passenger
Give the international airline the same dog and kennel details. Can it carry your dog on the exact itinerary? How will the dog travel? Which carrier does it accept, and how do you reserve the pet’s space? Include every connecting flight.
As USDA’s Belize travel guidance explains, airlines have their own requirements as well as the destination’s entry rules. International carriage, Belize entry and island transport each need approval. An answer from one does not settle the other two.
Bring your veterinarian in now, too. Share the route and proposed departure date so vaccinations or treatments can be scheduled well before the final certificate appointment.
Put the paperwork on a calendar
Obtain the BAHA import permit before travel and follow the conditions BAHA confirms for your dog. Its June 2023 published conditions set several deadlines:
A veterinary certificate issued within two weeks of travel.
Current rabies vaccination, with at least 28 days after a first rabies vaccination; puppy and adult-booster provisions need separate review.
Vaccinations against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus.
Internal-parasite treatment within 30 days of export.
Give those conditions to your veterinarian. Older guidance remains online, so take conflicting information to BAHA’s Animal Health team, which can also confirm applicable fees and inspection arrangements.
For dogs departing the United States, USDA says the certificate should be issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian; APHIS endorsement is not required. Keep the permit, certificate and vaccination records somewhere you can reach during the journey.
Leave room between landing and takeoff
Your dog’s arrival includes a BAHA inspection. BAHA’s conditions also call for two working days’ advance notification when veterinary inspection is required because of countries visited or transited. Check what applies to your route before departure.
Tropic Air recommends at least two hours between an international arrival at BZE on another airline and its onward flight. Discuss that connection with the operator: your pet arrangement and inspection may call for more time.
Settle the late-arrival plan when making the reservation. Identify a pet-accepting overnight option and confirm that your particular dog is welcome. A night on the mainland can be a sensible choice. There is no prize for the tightest connection, although there can be quite a bill.
Finish at the front door
Before committing to a home, check the written rental or building rules for your dog, including size limits, charges and shared-space restrictions. Do the same for temporary accommodation.
Then picture an ordinary day there. Where will you walk? Where can the dog rest comfortably? How will you manage the first arrival with a kennel and luggage?
Bring those questions to Will Mitchell’s team when discussing homes in San Pedro. They matter as much as the bedroom count and the budget. The move is ready to book when you have a route your dog can travel and a front door you can both walk through.
