NBA Champion Fred VanVleet recently returned to Belize for another unforgettable adventure. From helicopter tours and lobster diving to inspiring local youth, here's why Belize keeps bringing him back.
When NBA Champion Fred VanVleet visited Belize for the first time, I had a feeling it wouldn't be his last.
After spending time exploring the country, meeting locals, and experiencing everything from the Caribbean Sea to the Belizean jungle, he came back for round two—and somehow this trip was even bigger than the first.
Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to show a lot of people around Belize. Investors, retirees, entrepreneurs, business owners, and travelers from all over the world. But Fred's visits have been unique because he embraced every part of the experience.
Some people come to Belize and spend their entire trip at a resort. Fred wanted to see everything.
Fred's journey to the NBA mirrors a lot of what makes Belize special.
He wasn't a highly touted prospect. He wasn't drafted. There was no guarantee he would ever make it to the league.
Instead, he bet on himself.
That mindset carried him from being undrafted in 2016 to becoming an NBA Champion with the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and eventually one of the most respected veterans in professional basketball.
When we sat down to talk during his recent visit, one thing became clear: his success wasn't built on luck. It was built on confidence, consistency, and a willingness to take a different path when necessary.
I asked Fred the obvious question.
What makes someone visit Belize once and then come back again? His answer was simple. Belize has a little bit of everything. From beaches and islands to rivers, jungles, wildlife, waterfalls, and ancient Maya sites, few countries pack so much diversity into such a small geographic area. But it wasn't just the scenery. According to Fred, the people, food, and overall energy of the country played an equally important role in bringing him back. He described Belize as one of his favorite places in the world and a place where he feels genuinely happy and relaxed.
During his two visits, Fred has experienced Belize in a way very few visitors ever do.
Over the course of the trips we:
Flew by helicopter over Belize's mountains and rainforest
Visited remote waterfalls
Explored the Caribbean Sea
Went lobster diving during lobster season
Rode horses through the countryside
Met with Prime Minister John Briceño
Visited communities throughout the country
Hosted a basketball camp for hundreds of Belizean children
At one point during our interview, Fred laughed and admitted that every day seemed to bring a completely different adventure.
One day you're flying through the mountains in a helicopter.
The next day you're diving for lobster.
The day after that you're meeting Belize's Prime Minister.
It's a reminder of how much this country has to offer for people willing to explore beyond the beach.
One of the highlights of the trip wasn't a helicopter ride or a luxury experience. It was spending time with Belizean kids. During a basketball camp in Orange Walk, Fred met and worked with hundreds of young athletes. Many of these kids come from communities where opportunities can be limited, but Fred's message was powerful. Believe in yourself. Keep working. Be ready when your opportunity comes.
As someone who went from being overlooked to becoming an NBA Champion, Fred's story resonated deeply with the students who attended.
Several of the kids spoke afterward about how inspiring it was to meet someone who had achieved the highest level in his sport despite facing obstacles and doubters along the way.
One thing Fred mentioned during our conversation stood out to me. He's traveled extensively throughout his career and has seen certain places experience periods of rapid growth and popularity. He believes Belize has that same energy right now. The country's combination of natural beauty, welcoming people, strong tourism growth, and increasing international attention is creating momentum that more people are beginning to notice. Whether it's investors looking for opportunities, retirees searching for a better lifestyle, or travelers looking for something different than the typical Caribbean destination, Belize continues to attract attention from around the world.
At the end of the interview, I asked Fred what he would tell another NBA player who was considering visiting Belize.
His answer was exactly what I expected.
Come see it for yourself.
Belize isn't something that can be fully explained through photos or videos. It's something you have to experience firsthand.
After two unforgettable trips, countless adventures, and memories that will last a lifetime, Fred VanVleet has officially become a Belize fan.
And judging by his reaction, I don't think this will be his last trip to Belize.
If you've ever thought about visiting Belize, investing in Belize, or even owning property here, there's never been a better time to learn more about what this incredible country has to offer.
The future of Belize is looking bright! Bet on yourself. Bet on BELIZE.
