Planning a move to Belize? Here’s a complete breakdown of the real costs, including immigration, residency, shipping, rent, buying property, utilities, groceries, transportation, and everyday living expenses.
If you're seriously considering moving to Belize, one of the first questions you're probably asking is:
How much money does it actually cost to move to Belize?
The answer depends heavily on how you plan to live.
Are you going to rent or buy? Are you bringing an entire household of furniture and personal belongings? Are you retiring through Belize's Qualified Retirement Program? Do you want Permanent Residency eventually? Are you planning to live comfortably on Ambergris Caye, or are you looking for something much more affordable on the mainland?
There isn't one number that applies to everyone.
So in this guide, we're breaking down the major costs associated with moving to Belize — from immigration and residency to shipping, housing, utilities, transportation, groceries, and buying property.
For an even deeper look at everyday expenses, read our Cost of Living in Belize 2026 guide. Cost of Living in Belize (2026)
Before talking about rent, groceries or golf carts, you first need to understand your immigration options.
For many people considering a full-time move to Belize, there are two primary pathways worth understanding:
Enter Belize as a visitor, legally extend your stay and eventually pursue Permanent Residency.
Apply through Belize's Qualified Retirement Program, commonly known as the QRP.
These are very different programs with different requirements and benefits.

One common route is to enter Belize legally as a visitor and continue extending your lawful stay while working toward eligibility for Permanent Residency.
Belize Immigration currently states that a Visitor's Permit Extension allows an additional 30 days in Belize and costs BZ$200. The Immigration Department specifically lists people “investigating the possibilities of settlement” among those who may qualify for an extension. A visitor generally cannot take employment or engage in business or a profession without the appropriate authorization.
Official Belize Visitor's Permit Extension Information
Remember that the Belize dollar is conventionally pegged to the U.S. dollar at approximately:
BZ$2 = US$1
This is where it's important to be precise.
Belize Immigration currently states that an applicant for ordinary Permanent Residence must:
Have been legally residing in Belize for at least one year at the time the application is submitted.
Have spent no more than 14 total days outside Belize during that qualifying year.
Demonstrate current and continuing financial stability.
Meet the applicable criminal-record requirement.
Belize Immigration: Do You Qualify for Permanent Residence?
The Immigration Department's current PR document checklist includes items such as your passport, medical certificate and testing, police record, proof of financial stability, photographs and documentation for accompanying spouses or children.
Official Permanent Residence Document Requirements
In our video, we recommend roughly US$1,000–$2,000 as a planning budget for the associated application process, medical work, police records and other expenses.
That isn't an official government quote and everyone's circumstances can be different.
Some applicants handle the process themselves. Others retain a Belizean attorney or immigration professional to assist with the paperwork, which adds additional cost.
Residence applications can be submitted at designated Immigration offices including Belmopan, Belize City, Corozal, Orange Walk, San Pedro, Big Creek and Punta Gorda.
Where to Apply for Belize Permanent Residence
Permanent Residence can eventually create a pathway toward Belizean citizenship.
According to Belize Immigration, a Permanent Resident may qualify to apply for citizenship after holding PR for a minimum of five years, provided the applicant also complies with the applicable residence and travel requirements during that period. Immigration currently limits extended absences after PR, including generally not residing outside Belize for more than 30 consecutive days or accumulating more than three months outside Belize in a 12-month period, subject to certain exceptions.
Official Belize Citizenship Qualification Rules
So the simplified path looks something like:
Visitor → Maintain Legal Status → Qualify for Permanent Residence → Hold PR and Meet Requirements → Potential Citizenship
Another popular route — particularly for retirees and people with qualifying foreign income — is the Qualified Retirement Program, or QRP.
The QRP is administered by the Belize Tourism Board, not simply the Immigration Department.
As of 2026, BTB says applicants can qualify beginning at 40 years old.
The current principal requirements include:
Being 40 years of age or older
Receiving at least US$2,000 per month or US$24,000 annually in qualifying foreign-sourced retirement income
Undertaking to deposit the required funds into a licensed financial institution in Belize
Passing the applicable security clearance
Remaining in Belize for at least 30 consecutive days annually
Importantly, BTB's definition of qualifying retirement income is broader than just a traditional pension. Its current page includes sources such as pensions, annuities, Social Security benefits, investment accounts, inheritance, personal savings and certain retirement plans.
Official Belize Tourism Board QRP Program
BTB currently lists:
US$150 application program fee
US$1,000 final applicant fee
US$750 dependent fee
US$200 QRP ID card fee
US$25 annual QRP ID card renewal fee
Always verify fees before applying because programs and government charges can change.
For people relocating with a substantial amount of personal property, QRP can become particularly interesting.
BTB currently says qualifying QRP members may receive import duty and tax exemptions during the applicable period for personal household effects and approved transportation, including qualifying motor vehicles, boats and light aircraft.
BTB also says a master shipping list for household and personal effects should be provided before importation so the appropriate exemption documentation can be prepared.
This can make an enormous difference because import taxes are one of the expenses that often surprise people moving to Belize.
Once you've figured out how you're legally going to live in Belize, the next question is:
What are you actually bringing with you?
There are really two approaches.
You can sell or store most of your belongings before moving and purchase what you need once you're in Belize.
Or you can ship a household's worth of belongings down.
South Florida and Houston are two common freight gateways for cargo headed to Belize.
One company frequently used for Belize freight is Hyde Shipping.
Hyde currently operates freight service from Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale to Belize City and maintains a South Florida warehouse in Hialeah.
Hyde Shipping — Belize Freight Information
Hyde also provides specific instructions for palletized cargo, loose boxes, vehicles and containers, so I would contact them directly for a current quote before budgeting your move.
Another option is Belize Freight, which operates a Houston receiving warehouse for goods headed to Belize. Its current instructions list a Houston location and procedures for having purchases delivered directly to its facility.
Belize Freight — Houston Shipping Instructions
The following are general planning estimates from our video, not quotes from the shipping companies.
You might budget approximately:
Ocean freight: US$3,000–$5,000
Port and terminal charges: US$500–$1,500
Belize customs broker: US$300–$800
Delivery within Belize: US$500–$2,000
Packing and loading: US$1,000–$3,000
A broad planning number would be approximately:
US$6,000–$10,000+
depending on what you're shipping and where it ultimately needs to go.
A 40-foot container obviously increases the cost.
Ocean freight could potentially be around:
US$5,000–$8,000
with the overall relocation potentially falling somewhere around:
US$9,000–$15,000+
Again, these are illustrative planning numbers.
Your actual cost can vary substantially depending on the origin, carrier, cargo, container availability, port fees, final destination in Belize and current freight pricing.
Shipping cost and import cost are two different things.
Belize Customs calculates duties based on the classification and customs value of imported goods. Customs says applicable import-duty rates vary significantly by product, with many goods attracting a 20% import-duty rate, although individual classifications can be higher, lower or exempt.
That's why you shouldn't simply apply one flat percentage to everything you're moving.
Before importing expensive furniture, appliances, vehicles or equipment, check the official Customs resources or speak with a Belize customs broker.

This is where you need to do the math.
Moving an entire household internationally can become expensive quickly.
Some people decide they're better off selling furniture, appliances and bulky belongings in the United States or Canada and purchasing what they need once they're in Belize.
Others have specific furniture, equipment or personal belongings that make a container worthwhile.
There's no universally correct answer.
Compare:
Purchase price of the item + shipping + duty + broker fees + final delivery
against:
What it costs to purchase a comparable item in Belize.
For QRP applicants, obviously factor in any duty exemptions for which you actually qualify.
Housing is probably going to be the biggest component of your budget. Some people want to rent for six months or a year before deciding exactly where they want to live. Others already know they want to own property here. If you're still learning the country, I strongly recommend understanding how different Belize can feel depending on where you live. Ambergris Caye, Placencia, Hopkins, Cayo, Corozal and more remote mainland communities can offer completely different lifestyles and price points.

Yes. Foreign buyers can own Belize real estate directly, including homes, land and beachfront property. You do not need to become a Permanent Resident or Belizean citizen before purchasing property. This is important because moving to Belize and buying property in Belize are two separate decisions. You could buy a property today and relocate years later. Our detailed foreign-ownership guide explains title, beachfront ownership, the buying process and several issues international buyers should understand before purchasing.

This depends heavily on location. For Ambergris Caye, I would generally consider approximately US$200,000 and up a realistic starting point for many international buyers looking for a move-in-ready property, although properties certainly exist below and far above that number. Belize has everything from affordable mainland homes and undeveloped land to condos, canal-front homes, luxury beachfront villas and multi-million-dollar estates. The important thing is understanding what lifestyle you're buying, not simply comparing square footage.
For example:
Belize's largest tourism island offers San Pedro, established beachfront areas, Secret Beach, canal communities and an extensive vacation-rental market.

Secret Beach offers one of the lower entry points into the Ambergris Caye market, with land opportunities as well as homes, villas and waterfront property.

For buyers looking for a more established master-planned community, Mahogany Bay offers canal-front living, amenities and a substantial vacation-rental market.

The property price isn't your entire acquisition cost. Buyers should also account for things such as:
Government stamp duty
Attorney/closing costs

Potential title insurance
Company formation if applicable
Due diligence costs

Rent has a very wide range. A basic or more locally oriented property might start around: US$500 per month Mid-range properties can move well above that, while comfortable furnished properties in popular expat and tourism markets commonly run into the thousands. On Ambergris Caye, many comfortable international-standard rentals can fall somewhere around US$1,200–$3,500 per month, depending on size, location, amenities, furnishings and seasonality. Luxury beachfront villas can go substantially higher. Our more detailed Ambergris Caye cost-of-living guide breaks this down further.
Cost of Living on Ambergris Caye in 2026
One reason monthly rentals can be expensive in Belize's major tourism destinations is opportunity cost. An owner may have the option to rent a property long-term to you or offer that exact same property as a nightly vacation rental. That's especially relevant on Ambergris Caye.
Electricity is one expense you should pay attention to. If you're moving from somewhere with inexpensive electricity, Belize can be an adjustment — particularly if you run air conditioning constantly. A relatively conservative household might spend around: US$75 per month while large villas running numerous AC units can spend hundreds of dollars or, in extreme situations, more than US$1,000 per month. Belize Electricity Limited publishes its rate schedules, while the Public Utilities Commission regulates Belize's electricity sector.

The biggest variable is usually consumption, particularly air-conditioning use.
Water is generally much less expensive than electricity. A rough household planning estimate might be: US$20–$50 per month although your actual bill will depend on location, household size and consumption.
Internet infrastructure in Belize has improved significantly. For many households, approximately: US$30–$100+ per month is a reasonable planning range, depending on speed, service and location. Digi currently offers residential internet service including fiber in covered areas and allows non-Belizeans to apply using a passport.

People working remotely should always verify service availability at the specific property they're considering rather than assuming identical coverage nationwide.
If you're living on Ambergris Caye, your primary transportation may be a golf cart rather than a conventional vehicle. Long-term golf cart rentals can run approximately: US$300–$500 per month. Many full-time residents eventually decide to purchase instead.
Depending on specifications, age, gas versus electric and other factors, a golf cart might cost roughly: US$10,000 with both cheaper and considerably more expensive options available.
Private health-insurance costs vary considerably depending on:
Age
Coverage level
Deductible
International versus local coverage
Medical history
Provider
A rough planning number discussed in our video is approximately:
US$150–$350 per month
but this is one area where you should get actual personal quotes rather than relying on a national average.
Groceries are another category where your lifestyle matters enormously. If you primarily buy locally produced food, fruits, vegetables, seafood, chicken and Belizean products, your grocery bill can remain relatively reasonable. If you want to recreate a North American supermarket cart full of imported brands, your costs can increase considerably. A broad planning range discussed in our video is approximately:
US$150–$1,220 per month.
Imported goods have shipping and taxation built into the final retail price, which is why the difference between “living local” and heavily consuming imported products can be substantial.
Here is a broad planning framework:
Expense Approximate Monthly Cost: Rent US$500–$2,500 + Electricity US$75–$1,500 + Water US$20–$100 Internet US$30–$100 + Golf cart rental US$300–$500 Groceries US$150–$1,220
These numbers aren't meant to tell you exactly what your life in Belize will cost.
They're intended to show why one person could live relatively affordably while another could easily spend many thousands of dollars every month.
Belize gives you a very broad lifestyle spectrum.
When people imagine moving to Belize, they usually think about the obvious expenses:
Housing.
Food.
Flights.
Maybe a golf cart.
But the expenses that can catch new residents off guard include:
Moving imported goods into Belize can become expensive depending on what you're bringing.
Check Belize Customs Before Shipping
Heavy air-conditioning use can dramatically change your monthly budget.
Renting a golf cart indefinitely adds up.
Moving an entire household internationally can cost thousands of dollars before Customs and final delivery.
Visitor extensions, applications, medical tests, police records and professional assistance all need to be included in your relocation budget.
If you're purchasing instead of renting, don't budget only for the sale price.
Read Our Belize Closing Costs Guide
This is another strategy worth considering.
You don't need to wait until the day you're ready to relocate permanently before buying property.
Because foreigners can own Belize real estate without becoming residents first, some buyers purchase years before retirement and allow the property to appreciate, generate rental income or simply secure their preferred location while they're still working.
We've written an entire guide about that strategy:
Buying in Belize Before You Retire
For the right person, buying and relocating don't necessarily need to happen at the same time.
There really isn't one answer.
Someone arriving with a couple of suitcases, renting a modest home and living relatively locally could make the transition with a much smaller budget.
Someone purchasing a luxury property, shipping a 40-foot container, importing vehicles and running air conditioning throughout a large villa will have a completely different experience.
That's why I encourage people to break the move into five questions:
1. How will you legally stay in Belize?
2. Will you rent or buy?
3. Will you ship your belongings or start fresh?
4. Where in Belize do you actually want to live?
5. What standard of living do you want once you're here?
Answer those five questions and your true relocation budget becomes much easier to calculate.
