Holy Cross School in San Pedro, Belize has been changing lives for generations, providing education, stability, meals, mentorship, and opportunity for more than 450 children on the island. In this transformation project, the community came together to completely rebuild the school’s soccer field — adding new turf, fencing, a roof structure, and an inspirational mural wall to create a space the kids can truly call their own.
Some projects are bigger than construction.
This was one of them.
At the Holy Cross School in San Pedro, Belize, more than 450 children rely on the school not only for education, but for stability, opportunity, mentorship, meals, community, and hope for the future.
For years, Holy Cross has quietly changed lives on the island.
What started as a small effort to help children who couldn’t access education grew into one of the most impactful schools in Belize. The school was originally founded after volunteers noticed children selling handmade items on the beach during school hours because there simply wasn’t enough classroom space available on the island.
Instead of accepting the situation, the community stepped in and built something.
Within just a few years, the school expanded rapidly as families desperately searched for opportunities to give their children an education and a better future.
Today, Holy Cross School represents far more than classrooms.
It represents what can happen when a community truly invests in its kids.
For all the incredible work being done at Holy Cross, one area still needed major help:
the soccer field.
The field was rough, uneven, and filled with hard marl and rocks. Balls constantly rolled into the mangroves beside the lagoon. Kids were getting hurt diving and falling during games. The goals were damaged, the fencing was limited, and space was extremely tight.
But despite the conditions, the kids still played every chance they got.
Because for many of them, soccer is everything.
It’s confidence.
It’s teamwork.
It’s joy.
It’s community.
And that’s why we decided to completely rebuild the field.
The goal wasn’t simply to install artificial grass.
We wanted to create something the students could truly feel proud of.
The project included:
brand-new turf,
upgraded goals,
improved fencing,
a covered roof structure,
and a large inspirational mural wall for the kids.
But like most projects in Belize, things didn’t exactly go perfectly.
Materials were delayed at the Belize-Guatemala border. The turf crew got stuck in customs dealing with paperwork issues. The school had already reopened. And we were racing against the clock to finish everything before construction started disrupting classes too heavily.
Still, everyone kept pushing.
Because everybody understood this project mattered.
One of the most beautiful parts of the entire process was watching how many people stepped in to help.
Engineers.
Builders.
Volunteers.
Artists.
Donors.
Teachers.
Parents.
Students.
Everyone contributed in some way.
Houston artist Frankie Cardona even flew down on short notice to create a massive mural wall for the students featuring vibrant artwork inspired by soccer, creativity, and community.
And honestly, by the final day, the field no longer felt like just a construction project.
It felt like something the entire island had built together.
Holy Cross School is one of those places that reminds you how powerful education and community support can be.
The staff and leadership have spent years creating opportunities for children who otherwise may never have had access to them.
And the impact goes far beyond academics.
The school helps shape confidence, discipline, friendships, leadership, and hope for hundreds of kids in San Pedro every single year.
That’s why projects like this matter.
Not because of turf.
Not because of soccer.
Because kids deserve spaces where they feel inspired, safe, and valued.
Holy Cross School continues doing incredible work for children and families in Belize, and they can always use additional support from people who want to make a difference.

At the end of the project, the REMAX team played the students in soccer on the brand-new field.
And yes…
the kids absolutely destroyed us.
But honestly, that was probably the perfect ending.
Because this field was never really about us.
It was about giving the students of Holy Cross something that truly belonged to them.
A place to play.
A place to grow.
A place to dream.
And seeing those kids run onto that field for the first time made every stressful moment completely worth it.
