Secret Beach gets electricity as BEL and BTB begin a major grid extension. Here’s what it could mean for property values, building a home, new businesses and local jobs.
The beach, the sunsets and the demand were already there. Now Secret Beach is getting something that could do more for its next stage of growth than another hotel, restaurant or beach club: a connection to Belize’s national electricity grid.
Power poles are already going into the ground along the road. On October 15, Belize Electricity Limited and the Belize Tourism Board announced a partnership to bring grid electricity to the area, with implementation beginning. For property owners and people who have been waiting to build, this is a major development.
Think about what changes when electricity reaches a property. Building no longer has to come with the responsibility of providing the entire power supply. Moving in becomes a simpler proposition. Opening a business involves one less substantial system to buy and manage. Land that appealed to people comfortable with an off-grid project can start appealing to people who never wanted one.
That is a much bigger story than new utility poles. It is about what becomes possible around them.

Why electricity matters to property values
Secret Beach has grown while every home and business has had to arrange its own electricity. Solar, batteries and generators have made that growth possible, including comfortable homes and successful tourism businesses. But independent power also comes with a cost, and that cost sits alongside the land, the building and everything else an owner needs to get started.
For someone deciding whether to build, those extra requirements can be the difference between going ahead and putting the plans aside. Grid access changes that calculation.
A property with an available utility connection is easier for more people to consider. A family does not have to be enthusiastic about off-grid living to imagine a home there. An investor can assess a rental project without first designing its entire independent power supply. An existing owner has another reason to move from holding land to developing it.
More interest in usable land creates the conditions for stronger demand and upward pressure on property values. That is the opportunity here. Electricity improves the practical appeal of the location, giving more people a reason to commit to it.
The result will depend on where service reaches, the property itself and the wider market. But the underlying change is substantial: one of the major considerations attached to Secret Beach land is being addressed by a utility network.

From “one day” to building plans
Anyone who has considered building abroad knows how quickly an exciting idea becomes a list of things to organize. Land, design, contractors, materials, water, power. Each has to work before the home can work.
Electricity removes a significant piece of that burden once a connection is available. Builders gain another source of power for construction, and owners can plan the finished property around utility service rather than relying entirely on standalone generation.
For people who already own land, that can bring a project closer to starting. For people considering a move, it makes everyday life easier to picture. The idea of spending a few weeks beside the water becomes easier to extend into several months, or a permanent home.
Existing solar systems still have a role. Owners who value solar can keep using it. What changes is the range of choices, and the number of people for whom living at Secret Beach feels practical.
New businesses follow new possibilities
The effects do not stop at the property line. When more people build and spend time in an area, they need more places to eat, shop and get things done. That creates openings for businesses, which in turn make the area more convenient and appealing to live in.
Electricity helps both sides of that process. It supports the homes that bring customers into the community and the businesses that serve them.
For an entrepreneur, being able to connect to the grid means less dependence on independently generated power. For a business already running on a generator, it offers a route away from the fuel costs, noise and maintenance that come with using it as a primary supply.
BEL and BTB identify those savings among the project’s expected benefits. Their announcement also points to improved lighting, safer surroundings and longer evening hours for businesses. Belize Live News’s report places the development against the approaching high tourism season.
Imagine the commercial effect of more visitors staying for dinner, more accommodation welcoming overnight guests and more residents supporting businesses throughout the week. Electricity alone does not create those customers, but it makes serving them easier. Combined with the appeal Secret Beach already has, that is a significant opening for local enterprise.
The people who benefit reach far beyond property owners
A home being built creates work for contractors and tradespeople. A business opening creates demand for staff and suppliers. A growing neighbourhood needs maintenance, transport, food and everyday services.
Those are opportunities for Belizean households to earn more, build businesses and share in the area’s growth. The value of this project should be understood in those terms as well as through property prices. A place that becomes easier to build in and do business in can support more livelihoods.
That is why the announcement matters to people who already live and work here, as much as it matters to someone considering an investment from abroad.
An island preparing for more growth
Secret Beach’s grid extension also comes alongside a separate investment in Ambergris Caye’s wider electricity supply. The Millennium Challenge Corporation’s Belize Compact includes a new high-voltage submarine cable from mainland Belize, intended to strengthen the island’s supply and reduce reliance on expensive emergency generation.
One project strengthens the supply reaching the island. The other brings service into Secret Beach. Together, they address both the needs of the existing economy and the infrastructure required for further growth.
The moment to take notice
Individual connection dates and a detailed rollout map have not yet been announced. Owners should confirm service availability for their parcel with BEL before changing construction or power plans.
But the significance of the announcement is clear. Secret Beach has already grown into a destination people want to visit, invest in and call home. Grid electricity makes it easier to turn that interest into construction, businesses and a larger year-round community.
For someone holding land, it is a reason to revisit the plans. For someone considering a business, it is a reason to run the numbers again. And for everyone who has been watching Secret Beach and waiting for a major step forward, this is one.
The poles are going in. What gets built around them is the story to watch.
